APRS

Automatic Position Reporting System

Version 0.05

  1. SOAP may have lots of feature points, but as serial protocols go, it's pants! (OK I'm a bit twiddler at heart. Sending lots of spaces and <'s really doesn't go down well with me, nor my slow ADSL connection.)

I'm retrieving 20000 call signs of average 8 characters. Each encodes to around 27 characters:
    <__><string>G8OSH-7</string>CRLF

That takes 16 seconds to send over the ADSL upstream link the server's running on!

I'm now using the BinaryFormatter, slightly better at 10 seconds!
I could roll my own unformatted binary stream...
Compression classes come with .NET 2005. I will wait.
  2. Janitor is a new server component. Janitor goes running around deleting records over a week old. The janitor also removes duplicate position records. The time a station arrives at a location, and leaves that location, are preserved.
  3. Trails - these can now be displayed.
  4. SlabServer is a new server component. It knows about stations calling in, and their position down to lat long degree square.
  5. 11,000,000 calls recorded so far. 20,110 different callsigns.
